THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF OLIGARCHICAL COLLECTIVISM
By
Emmanuel Goldstein

Chapter 4.
BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.

Since ancient times, it has been known that the eyes are the windows to each person’s soul. Only preserving from the past what is good to them, the Party took this piece of old wisdom in order to protect themselves.

The true supporter of Ingsoc does not question the Party’s principles, he does not even stop to think about them. He is able to doublethink without even knowing it. This is the best way to identify a traitor, a thoughtcriminal, for he actually doubts the principles taught by the Party since Revolution, principles all goodthinkers follow unconditionally.

However, since the Party has not yet developed a method to read other people’s minds; they have to rely on other ways: spies, recording of images and sounds, the telescreen, etc. are common methods used to catch unorthodox people. Nevertheless, skilled Party followers and opponents are able to identify traitors or people committing thoughtcrime without these devices. The careful focus of these people on the other’s eyes allows them to unmask the enemies of the Party.

Having this kind of conscious over other people; knowing how should one behave to disguise as the rest of the Party supporters, and what look the eyes have during a thoughtcrime; might constitute a thoughtcrime itself. That is why only the Inner Party and the rebels identify clearly this sign.

Therefore, knowing how to disguise one’s true feelings while appearing unexpressive on the outside at the same time, is the key to successful rebellion against the Party. One should trust his own intuition more than anything else, one should forget what the Party has taught us.

These thoughtwatchers are capable of distinguishing messages that, for other people, are unrecognizable. They describe the feeling as though both minds open and the thoughts flow from one into the other through their eyes. Once this process of exchange happens, there is no mistake or misunderstanding between both people. They just know.

These incidents are just flashes, they last seconds or less; they never have a sequel, since the people caught then try to protect themselves by avoiding the other’s sight. And, after it, both people return to their usual inscrutable expression.

But thoughtwatch does not only occur when a thoughtcrime is being committed, but it also depicts guilt, sadness, doom, resignation. The knowledge that any person has these feelings is one of the most powerful weapons the Party has access to. But, the difficulty of it and the lack of practice and development of better methods, gives an advantage to people who are rebelling against the Party; people who are in danger of getting caught or denounced; people who actually have consciousness about Ingsoc.

When a thought police or a faithful follower of the Party is able to use eyes as a weapon,he will denounce every traitor that is foolish enough to reveal his innermost thoughts. When he is caught and taken to the Ministry of Love, Big Brother has won the battle over him. There is no way he will be able to obtain victory; no one is certain of what are the Party’s methods towards the traitors; but it is known that after being caught, all traitors are bound to die.

Even if an unorthodox is only recognized by his peers, they will end up confessing to the Party. Every thoughtcriminal will be caught some day. Big Brother, as explained in past chapters, is not a person, but the Party itself; which is immortal since the death of one (or even more) members can be replaced. Consequently, since traitors will always be persecuted, the Party will always defeat the rebellion. Big Brother will always win over the unorthodox because there will always be someone watching over the people for thoughtcriminals. From this comes the Party’s slogan: Big Brother is watching you!

Finalmente, siento muy adhoc el citar a Tim McIlrath (cantante) de Rise Against:

"A lot of what punk rock and this whole community is, is really hard to explain to someone outside of it, if not impossible."

Para mí, son una especie de Winstons dentro del punk... y con más esperanzas de salir victoriosos.
